If you are not already aware of Teddy Rock, then you've been hiding under one, but then of course you may not be under five years old.
My three year old came home from day-care singing 'Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall' like I had never heard it before. She was rocking out doing all the actions of an MTV rapper and the beat was more reminiscent of the Beastie Boys than the playschool version I knew. When quizzed about her approach to the old nursery classic, she announced that 'teddies rock', apparently a new CD was being played on high rotation at her day-care centre and we needed a copy.
Also known as 'Kindie Rock', Buzz, Belle and Bop of Teddy Rock have release their first CD and DVD Nursery-wave Party (ABC Music) and are sending kids into a frenzy at day-care centres across Australia (due for release in New Zealand soon).
The CD features 24 best loved nursery rhymes, guaranteed to get to get their dancing shoes on, but this gen-x mum would have to argue that the album is not just for the young. If you caught the indi-punk-ska alternative music scene you will love 'Teddy Rock', even my metal head partner is the first to suggest putting the CD on in the car. It's great if you love belting out a song, and best yet you know all the words.
The nursery rhymes are not sung to the traditional melody but with tunes reminiscent of The Sex Pistols, The Cure, B-52's, The Clash, and possibly The Ramones. Songs include 'This old man', 'Incy wincy spider', 'Jack and Jill', 'London Bridge is falling down', 'Mary had a little lamb', and you'll love Belle's version of 'Mary Mary quite contrary'.
Teddy Rock are: Buzz on guitar, Belle on Keyboards and Bop on Drums, who are rumoured to be touring soon, but for now get a hold of either the 24-track CD or 18-track animated DVD.
