Bleeding gums in pregnancy

During pregnancy you may find your gums feel sore and bleed when you brush your teeth.

Pregnancy hormones work to soften your ligaments and body tissue, helping to prepare your body for birth. Unfortunately, they can also make your gums tender. This combined with the fact that your blood volume is naturally higher now, means your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth. You may also be more prone to gum disease, such as gingivitis.

Though hormones may make your gums more susceptible to disease, the primary cause is still the bacteria found in plaque, which settles on your teeth, especially when you sip sugary drinks or indulge in sweet snacks.

Take special care of your teeth and gums, making sure you brush and floss at least twice a day, for two minutes each time.

TIP: Buy an electric toothbrush to get your pearly whites extra-clean while gently massaging the gums.
